The case

Why Hazel & Axe earns the placement.

The category is crowded with wines that are competent and forgettable. This one has three things that are hard to fake: a scored track record, a winemaker with a verifiable pedigree, and a story a server can repeat correctly after hearing it once.

94 ptsDecanter · 2023 Cabernet

Preceded by 93 points for the 2022. A repeatable score, not a one-vintage accident — which is what makes it safe to build a facing around.

4 SKUsOne label family

Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Merlot, Cabernet. A complete by-the-glass program or a four-facing shelf set from a single supplier in a single price band.

3 countiesNapa · Sonoma · Mendocino

Block-level sourcing across the North Coast, with Napa fruit in the reds. Real provenance behind a California appellation.

On-premise

Alcohol in check and acid intact means these wines pour across a whole menu rather than one section of it. The Merlot in particular fills a gap most books have stopped defending — a savory, Right-Bank-minded red that solves the table where one guest wants red and the food is not steak.

Off-premise

A ninety-four-point Cabernet under forty dollars is a pitch that does its own work. The white pair gives you seasonal rotation from the same supplier, and the packaging reads premium at ten feet — which is the only distance that matters in a retail aisle.

Buyer questions

Answered before you ask

Who makes the wine?
Robert Smith. A research internship at Gallo, a harvest at Quintessa, Covert Estate alongside luxury winemaker Julien Fayard, and Head Winemaker at Quixote working with Philippe Melka. The 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon was Kevin Morrisey’s final vintage for Erikson & Caradin. All wines from the 2024 vintage forward are Robert’s. Hazel & Axe is made in the Erikson & Caradin cellar in Napa Valley.
Why does the label say California and not Napa?
Because the blend draws from Napa, Sonoma and Mendocino counties. Sourcing block by block across the North Coast is what allows Napa-quality structure at this price point; a single-county appellation would force a compromise on either fruit or price.
What is the oak regime?
The 2023 Cabernet spends twelve months in 100% second-use French oak — no new wood. The Sauvignon Blanc sees none. The Chardonnay is aged six months in concrete egg with 5% new French oak. Specifics per wine are on each tech sheet.
Can we get samples and staff training?
